Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has stated that he intends to leave less than 1% of his immense wealth to his children, emphasizing the importance of them carving out their own paths rather than depending on inheritance.
Speaking on the Figuring Out With Raj Shamani podcast, Gates noted that his children have already benefited from an exceptional upbringing and education. His aim is to offer them opportunities while encouraging their independence and personal achievements.
With his net worth estimated at $162 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates believes that limiting their inheritance will help them establish their own identities. “It’s not a dynasty. I’m not asking them to run Microsoft. I want to give them a chance to have their own earnings and success,” he explained.
He further shared that his decision stems from ensuring his children are not defined by his extraordinary fortune. “You don’t want your kids to ever be confused about your support and love for them. So I do think explaining early on your philosophy—that you’re going to treat them equally and give them incredible opportunities—but that the highest calling for these resources is to go back to the neediest through the foundation,” he said.
Despite inheriting a small portion of his wealth, Gates pointed out that even 1% of his fortune amounts to over a billion dollars, securing their financial future.
A dedicated philanthropist, Gates continues to focus on global health, poverty reduction, and education through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
