British police have charged actor and comedian Russell Brand with rape and multiple counts of assault following allegations spanning from 1999 to 2005, according to a police statement released Friday.
Brand, 50, formerly married to U.S. pop star Katy Perry and once a prominent figure in British entertainment, has more recently gained attention as an online social commentator. Authorities confirmed the charges include one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault, involving four different women. “The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives urge anyone affected or with relevant information to come forward,” the statement said. In 2023, a joint report revealed that four women had accused Brand of sexual assaults—including rape—between 2006 and 2013.
Brand has denied the allegations, asserting that all of his past sexual encounters were consensual.
