An autopsy has confirmed that Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Segun died from sudden cardiac arrest. Investigations into his heart condition are still ongoing, and his body will be held for two weeks before being released for burial in Nigeria.
Segun collapsed during a light-heavyweight match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance and being rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The boxing community has expressed profound sadness over his death. The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control has expressed their sorrow and promised to support Segun’s family during this challenging time.
Segun began his professional boxing career in 2019, achieving significant success, including winning the Nigerian light heavyweight title and the West African Boxing Union (WABU) light heavyweight title. His professional record stood at 13 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, with 12 of his victories coming by knockout.
