An Iranian delegation arrived in Muscat, Oman, on Saturday for indirect discussions with U.S. officials regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, according to Iranian state media outlet IRIB. The Iranian Foreign Ministry reported that the two-and-a-half-hour meeting involved an exchange of official positions on nuclear issues and sanctions, with further talks scheduled for the following week. As the delegations departed, their respective heads briefly spoke in the presence of Oman’s foreign minister.
The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, held direct discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The talks were described as “positive and constructive,” with plans to resume on April 19.
Witkoff emphasized that he was acting on President Trump’s directive to pursue diplomacy and peaceful resolution.
President Trump had earlier referred to the meeting as a “very big” step in ongoing dialogue with Iran and expressed hope for a successful outcome. While Iran rejected a prior offer for direct talks, Foreign Minister Araghchi called the current engagement both a “test” and an “opportunity.”
Iran’s foreign ministry affirmed its commitment to diplomacy, signaling it would assess the U.S.’s intent and respond accordingly.
