Will Smith touches on his infamous Oscars slap incident with Chris Rock multiple times on his latest album, Based on a True Story. In response, Chris Rock’s brother, Tony Rock, had harsh words for the project. Speaking with TMZ, Tony dismissed the album as “trash” and “a piece of sh*t,” despite admitting he hasn’t actually listened to it—and says he doesn’t plan to. “Will Smith has an album out and it’s a piece of sh*t and he addresses the Oscars,” Tony said. “Everybody keeps telling me to stop talking about it, but then he puts it on a song. So that gives me leeway to talk about it again.”
Tony added that Smith only brought up the Oscars incident to help sell what he believes is a “shtty” album. “If the only selling point is that he talks about my brother, then it’s probably shtty as f*ck,” he said.
Will Smith dropped Based on a True Story on March 28, 2025—his first album in ten years. It includes features from Big Sean, Russ, Joyner Lucas, and his son Jaden. Despite the buzz, the album failed to chart on Billboard and was widely panned by critics, including Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.
On tracks like “Int. Barbershop Day” and “You Lookin’ For Me?”, Smith references the Oscars slap and its aftermath, suggesting he faced backlash because of his race and brushing off the incident as he raps about his comeback.
