A gunman opened fire at Florida State University on Thursday, killing at least one person and injuring five others before being shot and taken into custody, according to multiple media reports.

ABC News, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, confirmed one fatality in what marks the latest act of gun violence on a U.S. college campus. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by a lone shooter, according to reports.

Florida State’s emergency alert system stated that the “threat has been neutralized,” though it offered no further details. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare confirmed receiving six patients, one in critical condition and five in serious condition.

The shooting occurred around midday at the student union on the Tallahassee campus, prompting a shelter-in-place order for students and faculty. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, including student Max Jenkins, who saw the shooter fire multiple rounds after exiting the building, reportedly targeting a maintenance worker.

Three weapons were recovered: one on the suspect, another in a nearby vehicle, and a shotgun inside the student union, according to a law enforcement source.

This is the second shooting at FSU in the past 11 years. In 2014, a gunman injured three people at the university library. Thursday’s attack adds to a growing list of school shootings in the U.S., including deadly incidents at Virginia Tech in 2007, Michigan State University, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2023.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau’s Jacksonville office is assisting in the investigation and pledged continued support to local law enforcement.
