The UK Home Office has announced updated English language testing requirements for visa applicants, effective January 1, 2025. The new policy replaces the current LanguageCert ESOL SELT 4-skills test with two more specialized assessments: LanguageCert Academic SELT for student visa and university applicants, and LanguageCert General SELT for work visa holders such as skilled workers and healthcare professionals. While both tests still assess speaking, listening, reading, and writing, they are tailored to better reflect the language needs of different visa categories. The Home Office detailed which applicants must complete full four-skill testing versus only speaking and listening, and confirmed that prior ESOL SELT results remain valid for two years, with test vouchers usable for up to 12 months. Approved test providers remain the same.
The update is part of ongoing efforts to streamline and tailor the UK’s immigration system.
