President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into the U.S. education system.
According to White House staff secretary Will Scharf, the goal is to equip young Americans with AI skills to help them remain competitive in an increasingly AI-driven economy. According to reports, while the full text of the order hasn’t been released, a draft of the order indicates a focus on partnerships between schools and the private sector to bring AI tools into classrooms.
The order also directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to prioritize federal funding for training teachers and administrators in AI and incorporating the technology across various subjects. “AI is where it seems to be at,” Trump remarked during the signing.
The initiative also includes the creation of an AI education task force to foster collaboration between federal agencies and private companies, with the aim of teaching students both basic AI literacy and critical thinking. While schools have already started adopting AI in various ways, concerns remain about its potential misuse, including cheating and ethical issues.
This move follows a January executive order by Trump that rolled back some AI regulations and invested in AI infrastructure.
