Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who officially succeeded Justin Trudeau on Monday, issued a stark warning about President Trump, accusing him of attempting to undermine Canada.
In his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney claimed Trump has “fundamentally altered” global dynamics through aggressive actions, including broad tariffs and a controversial suggestion that Canada should merge with the United States.
“As I’ve cautioned for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our nation,” Carney said. “These aren’t just words — Trump is actively trying to break us to take control. That will never happen.”
Carney emphasized the need to confront a new global reality and reaffirmed Canada’s sovereignty. While his Liberal Party secured another term, it remains unclear if they have achieved a majority in Parliament.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat, promising to hold the Liberals accountable. Despite earlier momentum driven by voter frustration over inflation and immigration, Poilievre is now projected to lose his own parliamentary seat, according to reports.
Carney, who took over party leadership in March after Trudeau’s resignation ahead of Trump’s return to power, has been openly challenging the U.S. president’s criticisms and trade penalties, including a 25% tariff on imports outside the USMCA agreement.
In a unifying message, Carney concluded, “Let’s move beyond the division and anger. We are all Canadian, and my government will serve every citizen — regardless of language, location, or political choice.”
