In an exclusive interview “Meet the Press,” President Donald Trump sat down with Kristen Welker to discuss the future of his political career and the GOP. Trump made his strongest statement yet that he plans to step down at the end of a second term, acknowledging the constitutional barriers that prevent a third term.
“I’ll be an eight-year president, a two-term president. I’ve always believed that’s important,” Trump said, referencing the 22nd Amendment, which limits U.S. presidents to two terms. Despite previously hinting at interest in a third term and receiving encouragement from supporters, Trump admitted he’s aware it’s not legally permitted.
Although he said he’s heard alternative theories—including the idea of Vice President JD Vance winning the presidency and transferring power to him—Trump confirmed there have been no formal plans or meetings to explore such scenarios. He also dismissed speculation around 2028 campaign merchandise, saying it doesn’t reflect his actual intentions.
Trump shifted focus to future GOP leadership, highlighting Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as rising stars capable of continuing the MAGA movement. While praising both, he declined to name a clear successor, saying the 2028 race is still far off.
Rubio, currently serving in multiple key roles including national security adviser, was commended for his performance, though Trump noted his tenure in those positions may not be long-term.
As for political priorities, Trump said his attention is now on the 2026 midterms.
While facing backlash over controversial policies and slipping approval ratings, he expressed confidence that Republicans can defy historical trends and retain congressional control. He promised to remain deeply involved, particularly through fundraising efforts.
