Travelers who have not obtained a REAL ID by this week’s deadline were reassured by the head of Homeland Security that they will still be able to fly, though they will face additional identity checks.
Kristi Noem addressed a congressional panel on Tuesday, as long lines formed outside government offices across the U.S. with people rushing to update their IDs. She confirmed that 81% of travelers already have REAL ID-compliant identification, and that passports and tribal IDs will also be accepted at security checkpoints after the deadline passes.
Noem clarified that those without compliant IDs may face extra steps or be directed to a different line, but assured that they will be allowed to fly.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advised travelers without REAL IDs to arrive early and prepare for additional screening to prevent delays.
TSA’s Federal Security Director in New Jersey, Thomas Carter, expressed confidence that those who plan ahead should have no issues with their flights.
