President Donald Trump announced plans to reopen and significantly expand Alcatraz, the infamous island prison off the coast of California that was shut down in 1963.
In a post on Truth Social Sunday night, Trump declared, “REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!”, citing a rise in violent repeat offenders and calling for tougher measures to isolate the nation’s most dangerous criminals.
“For too long, America has tolerated violent repeat offenders—the worst of society,” Trump wrote. “We used to lock them away for good. That’s how it should be.”
He directed multiple federal agencies, including the Bureau of Prisons, the DOJ, FBI, and Homeland Security, to lead the reopening and expansion effort.
Trump also criticized judges who have ruled against his immigration policies, accusing them of weakening law enforcement. He argued the return of Alcatraz would symbolize a renewed commitment to “Law, Order, and JUSTICE,” adding, “We will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The proposal drew swift backlash from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called it unserious, pointing out that Alcatraz is now a national park and tourist destination.
Trump’s directive follows a Texas court ruling that struck down his administration’s attempt to use a centuries-old law to fast-track deportations of Venezuelan immigrants. The announcement also comes amid his praise for El Salvador’s controversial CECOT prison, which he has suggested as a model for future U.S. facilities.
