President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty over whether individuals in the United States — including undocumented immigrants and non-citizens — are guaranteed due process under the Constitution.
In a preview of an interview set to air on NBC’s Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, Trump was asked if he agreed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assertion that due process applies to everyone in the U.S.
“I don’t know. I’m not a lawyer,” Trump responded. “If that’s the case, we’d need a million or more trials.” He added that his legal team would follow whatever the Supreme Court decides.
The comments come as the Trump administration ramps up deportation efforts, recently invoking a rarely used wartime law to expel Venezuelan immigrants accused of gang ties. The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked some of these removals and ordered the return of at least one individual wrongly deported to El Salvador.
Separately, Trump clarified he is not seeking a third presidential term, saying, “To the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do that,” referencing the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment.
