Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was hospitalized after being stabbed 14 times by another inmate at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, about 75 miles north of Los Angeles. The attack took place early Monday morning in a prison housing unit.
According to a statement on his Instagram account, the 32-year-old suffered stab wounds to his back, torso, head, and face, causing both lungs to collapse. He was temporarily placed on a breathing machine but is now breathing unaided and said to be in good spirits despite the pain.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020 following an argument after a party at Kylie Jenner’s home.
During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez shot at her feet after demanding she “dance.” She later underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments.
Prison staff provided emergency care before Lanez was transferred to a medical facility for further treatment.
Authorities are investigating the stabbing but have not disclosed a motive.
The high-profile shooting case sparked division in the hip-hop community, with some artists supporting Lanez and asking the court for leniency.
Despite his incarceration, Lanez has hinted at releasing a new album titled Peterson.
