A Mexican Navy sailboat carrying 277 people crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, leaving two dead and at least 19 injured, authorities reported. The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. along the New York City waterfront.
Four of the injured sustained serious injuries, and two others remain in critical condition, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed early Sunday.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has deployed a team to investigate. According to NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles, the vessel lost power and mechanical control, causing strong currents to push it into a bridge pillar. The impact struck the ship’s mast, injuring sailors on board.
Spectators captured video of the mast—decorated with lights—colliding with the bridge, with crew members seen hanging from the rigging. Fortunately, no one fell into the water. Authorities stated there was no apparent structural damage to the bridge, which has since reopened after inspections.
The sailboat had departed from Pier 17 and was en route to Iceland. Officials suspect a mechanical failure led to the crash. Mayor Adams expressed gratitude to first responders and said the city is praying for the victims and their families.
