The Mexican government is suing the production company behind YouTuber MrBeast’s latest video, accusing them of violating the terms of an archaeological permit for filming at Mayan pyramid sites by promoting MrBeast’s own snack brand and profiting from Mexico’s cultural heritage.
The video, titled “I explored 2000 year old ancient temples,” has been viewed nearly 65 million times in a week and ends with MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) jokingly advertising his Feastables chocolate peanut butter cups as a “special Mayan dessert” and “the only Mayan-approved snack.”
Mexican authorities say Full Circle Media, the production company, had permission to film at locations including the famous Chichén Itzá pyramid near Cancun, but the permit explicitly prohibited commercial use. The Feastables promotion appears to have been filmed at the influencer’s campsite, although the exact location isn’t disclosed in the video.
A spokesperson for MrBeast reported that no advertising was filmed on the actual archaeological sites, which are protected by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and expressed regret that the issue has become politicized. The YouTuber has also faced accusations of spreading misinformation about Mayan culture.
INAH emphasized that the nation’s heritage cannot be exploited commercially and announced legal action against the production company, demanding damages and a public apology. Mexico’s Secretary of Culture, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, criticized those who misuse permits granted by institutions.
However, many Mexicans voiced skepticism about the lawsuit on social media, arguing that the real fault lies with officials who approved the filming without properly vetting the content creator.
Some saw the lawsuit as damaging the government’s credibility and providing MrBeast with unwanted publicity.
In the video, Donaldson marvels at his access to restricted temple areas, including zones off-limits to both tourists and locals.
As the highest-paid YouTuber in 2024, with 395 million subscribers and a net worth estimated at $550 million, MrBeast remains one of the platform’s most influential figures.
