Soon after Walmart revealed it would be raising prices on various products, President Donald Trump criticized the company on social media, accusing it of using tariffs as a scapegoat.
In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump stated, “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” and insisted the retailer and China should “EAT THE TARIFFS” instead of passing costs on to consumers. He added, “I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!”
Walmart had cited the impact of tariffs in its first-quarter earnings report, noting price hikes on items ranging from bananas to car seats. In response, Walmart told NBC News and CBS News, “We have always worked to keep our prices as low as possible and we won’t stop. We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins.”
