Notorious Haitian gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier recently made the strange claim that he and US President Donald Trump have “a lot in common.” Cherizier, infamous for burning his victims alive, compared himself to Trump by calling both of them patriots devoted to their countries.
In a rare interview with SBS News, Cherizier said, “Donald Trump is a patriot; he loves his country,” and added that they share a common goal of nationalism and doing what’s right for their nations.
Despite being the cause of much violence and chaos in Haiti—where his heavily armed gang controls large parts of the capital and the country has been in turmoil since a state of emergency was declared last year after mass prison breaks and gang attacks—Cherizier claimed he wants to restore peace and solve the country’s problems, accusing those in power of being unwilling to do so.
This statement is particularly striking given that earlier this month, the US officially designated Haitian gang coalitions as terrorist organizations, warning Americans against engaging with them.
The gangs control crucial infrastructure including a major fuel depot and the largest port in Haiti, charging tolls and wielding significant influence.
Meanwhile, ordinary Haitians are desperate for security and peace, with many fleeing their homes due to escalating violence.
Eric Jean, a bus driver, expressed the common hope: “The only thing the Haitian people are asking for is security,” highlighting the dire situation faced by many.
