A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students. Harvard sued the administration on Friday, claiming the move violates the First Amendment, Due Process Clause, and the Administrative Procedure Act. U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs issued a temporary restraining order and scheduled a hearing for Tuesday.
The Trump administration had claimed Harvard lost its Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) status for not complying with requests for information on student visa holders, accusing the school of fostering a hostile campus environment and supporting pro-Hamas sentiments.
Harvard President Alan Gerber denied these claims, stating the university responded as required by law.
The lawsuit argues the administration’s actions are retaliatory, targeting Harvard for its policies and disregarding constitutional protections.
This dispute adds to ongoing tensions, with Trump also threatening Harvard’s tax-exempt status and federal funding over campus policy disagreements. Despite the controversy, a recent poll shows most Americans support Harvard in the conflict.
