An Iranian rapper who was imprisoned for supporting anti-government protests has reportedly been sentenced to death, according to his lawyer.
Toomaj Salehi, known for his songs backing protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, faced charges related to his activism.
He had previously received a six-year and three-month prison sentence but avoided a death penalty through a Supreme Court ruling.
However, new charges surfaced in January, resulting in a renewed trial and the recent death sentence.
Salehi’s lawyer, Amir Raesian, plans to appeal against the sentence. Iranian authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
Salehi’s songs were critical of the Iranian leadership’s alleged corruption and repression of dissent. His case underscores the regime’s efforts to assert control and stifle opposition amid ongoing protests and social tensions.
