The 2024 MTV Movie & TV Awards have been canceled, with MTV opting to skip this year’s ceremony and return with a “reimagined” format in 2025, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The reason for the postponement remains unclear, but reports suggests factors like last year’s SAG-AFTRA and writers’ strikes, which caused production delays for many movies and shows, might have influenced the decision.
The 2023 awards were impacted by these strikes, leading host Drew Barrymore and other guests to drop out in solidarity with the writers, resulting in a hostless, pre-recorded virtual ceremony.
Barrymore, originally slated to host the 2024 ceremony after sitting out in 2023, expressed excitement about returning next year to celebrate MTV’s inclusive awards. However, it’s uncertain if she’ll host in 2025.
This isn’t the first time the MTV Movie & TV Awards have skipped a year; the 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, replaced by the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special hosted by Vanessa Hudgens.
The awards returned in 2021 with two ceremonies and again in 2022. The MTV Movie & TV Awards are scheduled to resume in 2025, with further details pending.
