Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II is set to be reinstated as the Emir of Kano and is expected to return to Kano on Friday to reclaim the throne.
This decision follows the Kano State House of Assembly’s resolution to remove the current Emir and repeal the controversial 2019 law that created four additional Emirates in the state.
Sources indicate that the only remaining step is the governor’s assent. Lawan Dala, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly who sponsored the Amendment Bill, confirmed after Thursday’s session that “the bill has been sent to the governor for assent.
Currently, there is no active Emir in any of the five Emirates: Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The amended law now empowers the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to select a new Emir.”
The restructuring of the Kano Emirate in 2019 was viewed as a political maneuver to reduce the influence of Emir Sanusi II, who had been critical of the administration of then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was subsequently deposed.
Explaining the repeal of the law, Muhammad Butu, the Deputy Speaker, stated that it aims to restore Kano’s former prominence, as the division of the Kano Emirate into five had diminished the state’s stature and influence nationally.
