Israeli airstrikes have targeted a UN school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, killing at least 27 people, according to local officials.
Local journalists reported that two missiles struck classrooms on the top floor of the school.
The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at a Hamas compound within the school.
Hamas has accused Israel of a “horrific massacre,” with footage showing destroyed classrooms and bodies at a morgue.
An injured woman in a video expressed her anguish over the repeated displacement and loss of children.
The director of the Hamas media office denied Israel’s claims about the Hamas command post.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad members involved in the October 7 attack on southern Israel.
The health ministry in Gaza, managed by Hamas, reported over 36,580 deaths since the conflict began.
The IDF mentioned efforts to minimize civilian casualties.
Separately, the Israeli military announced control over parts of the Bureij refugee camp and Deir al-Balah, where heavy bombardment has been reported.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) described the situation at Deir al-Balah’s al-Aqsa hospital as “apocalyptic,” with numerous casualties, predominantly women and children.
