A group of 35 federal lawmakers, known as Reformed Minded Lawmakers, are pushing for amendments to the 1999 Constitution.
They propose a single six-year term for the President and governors to reduce election costs and undue influence.
They also advocate for all elections to be held in a single day to save money, and for pre-election matters to be resolved 30 days before elections to ensure fairness.
They suggest a 14-day deadline for electoral officials to provide certified copies of electoral documents, and propose a one-year jail term for officials who fail to do so.
On governance, they propose:
– Rotating executive powers among the six geopolitical zones to reduce agitation for state creation.
– Recognizing Nigeria’s division into six geopolitical zones.
– Implementing a single six-year term for President and governors to reduce spending and enhance governance efficiency.
– Creating the offices of two vice presidents, one each from the north and south, with the first VP serving as a successor and the second as an economy minister.
– Requiring the President and first VP to come from the same part of the country, and allowing the first VP to become President if the President becomes incapacitated.
