An American tourist died, and his wife was severely injured while relaxing in a hot tub at a private Mexican resort on Tuesday. Authorities suspect the couple was electrocuted by a malfunctioning hot tub.
The victim, a 43-year-old man identified as Jorge G. from El Paso, Texas, was killed, and his wife, Lizette Z., suffered life-threatening injuries around 10 p.m. at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco, according to reports by the General Prosecutor’s Office for the State of Sonora.
Lizette Z. was transported to the U.S. and is in critical condition, according to reports.
The General Prosecutor’s Office indicated that Lizette Z. had burns consistent with electric shock, likely due to faulty wiring.
A witness familiar with the couple saw them in the outdoor hot tub, but neither was moving. When the bystander attempted to help, she was also shocked and had to call for assistance.
The official cause of death has not yet been determined, accordingtoreports, and the incident is under investigation.
An Arizona woman staying at the resort, Sara Gaitan-Perez, told the Arizona Daily Star that she and others tried to help the victims, but the man had no pulse when she arrived. “We had just come from the pool, and my husband and son were in that very same hot tub about an hour before,” she said.
