Former Nigeria national team coach Finidi George revealed in an interview the unprofessional manner in which the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) terminated his contract.
Following a disappointing international break, the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are now seriously in doubt.
Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw at home by South Africa and suffered a 1-2 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan in their second game of June.
With only 3 points from 4 games, the NFF deemed it necessary to make changes to the coaching staff, but they did not inform Finidi George that he was being replaced.
“They had a meeting on Wednesday and decided to hire a technical adviser. I have no issues with that,” Finidi told ESPN.
“But we had a three-hour meeting on Thursday, reviewing what happened and discussing the way forward. At no point did anyone mention that they were bringing in a technical adviser.
“I was on my way home and had just landed at the airport when I received a call about it. I was so surprised I had to pull over to read about it.
“I waited two days to see if they would have the courtesy to inform me, but I heard nothing from them. So, I decided to resign.
“Despite our recent results in the qualifying matches not meeting expectations, I remained dedicated to turning around our World Cup qualification campaign.
However, with the recent changes to the coaching staff, I believe it is time for me to step down from my position.”
