Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Michael Usi as vice president on Thursday, following the tragic death of former Vice President Saulos Chilima in an airplane crash last week.
Chilima and nine others perished in the military plane crash while returning to the capital Lilongwe on June 10.
According to a government statement, Usi will take the oath of office on Friday.
Previously, he held positions as Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, as well as Tourism, Culture, and Wildlife.
Usi, 55 years old, was a trusted associate of Chilima, having been his running mate in a past presidential election.
