The organized labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has called for an urgent meeting in response to the Federal Executive Council’s decision to defer the memo on the minimum wage.
According to sources, the meeting will be held at the NLC headquarters at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, where top officials will deliberate on the FEC’s action concerning the minimum wage memo.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed that all agenda items were addressed except for the minimum wage memo. He explained that the memo involves various stakeholders such as local governments, states, the federal government, the private sector, and labour unions, hence the decision to defer it.
The Tripartite Committee, which includes NLC, TUC, and representatives from local and state governments, as well as the federal government, submitted a report that included recommendations on the minimum wage.
The memo was deferred to allow President Bola Tinubu to undertake broader consultations before a final submission to the National Assembly.
Following an invitation from the President, the organized labour will communicate its decision after meeting with him.
