On Monday, President Bola Tinubu instructed security agencies to take action against those displaying Russian flags in Nigeria. This directive was communicated by Gen. Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, who briefed the media after a National Security Council meeting.
Musa explained that the meeting was prompted by the ongoing nationwide protests, which have led to violence in several states. Initially deemed peaceful, the protests have escalated, with criminals engaging in looting and other illegal activities.
The Chief of Defence Staff expressed concern about the presence of foreign flags, which he said is unacceptable.
He emphasized that flying such flags is considered treasonous and will be treated as a serious offense.
Musa noted that the individuals carrying these flags are mostly children being manipulated by others, and authorities are identifying and pursuing those responsible.
Musa reiterated the commitment of all security agencies to uphold democracy and national sovereignty, warning that any attempt to disrupt the country’s peace will not be tolerated. He also mentioned that the military would intervene if the protests became uncontrollable.
President Tinubu had previously appealed for an end to the protests in a national address, citing violence, loss of lives, and property damage. He warned against any attempts by opposition figures to undermine democracy in the country.
The meeting was attended by key figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
