The mass trial for #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters is set to begin today, September 2, 2024, in courts across Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Borno. Those detained in Abuja will be tried in Justice Emeka Nwite’s court, with human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) leading the defense team.
Amnesty International Nigeria reported that over 2,000 protesters were arrested during the 10-day demonstrations against hunger and misgovernance.
The organization has called for the immediate release of the detainees, urging the government to address the underlying issues that sparked the protests.
Of the 2,111 individuals arrested, 1,403 have already been brought before various courts.
Amnesty International criticized the lack of legal representation, noting that many suspects were remanded in custody.
Justice Nwite recently allowed the police to detain 124 protesters for 60 days while investigations continue.
Minor suspects are to be held at a correctional facility until the investigations are complete.
The Inspector-General of Police sought interim orders to keep the suspects in detention under various legal provisions.
Two separate ex-parte motions have been filed, requesting the detention of 75 and 49 protesters respectively, on charges including terrorism and treasonable felonies.
