Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris for president right after Tuesday night’s debate between Harris and Donald Trump.
Swift made the announcement on Instagram, signing it as “Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to a past comment by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.
In her post, Swift explained she was voting for Harris because Harris supports causes she believes in, calling her a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” Swift also said the country would benefit from leadership driven by calm instead of chaos.
The post included a photo of Swift with a cat, and the “Childless Cat Lady” remark was in response to a controversial comment made by Vance in 2021. He had referred to prominent Democrats, including Harris, as “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”
Swift praised Harris’s vice-presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, for his long-standing support of LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights.
Swift said she was partly motivated to go public after a fake AI image of her endorsing Trump circulated on his website, which she found concerning regarding misinformation. Trump’s promotion of the image sparked backlash among Swift’s fans.
While Swift’s endorsement follows a history of supporting Democratic candidates, including Joe Biden in 2020, experts suggest it might not have a significant impact on voter support for Harris, as her fanbase largely aligns with Harris’s supporters already. However, it could influence voter registration.
Swift ended her post by encouraging first-time voters to register and do their own research before voting.
