On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as merely a “show.”
Zakharova questioned the significance of the debate, suggesting that it was another performance by individuals who seemingly avoid accountability for their statements.
Zakharova expressed bewilderment at the focus on how the candidates might address global issues, criticizing them for not resolving their past mistakes, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Kremlin has indicated that President Vladimir Putin had no interest in watching the debate, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that such expectations were not the Kremlin’s concern but rather the American voters’.
Earlier, Putin humorously expressed a preference for Harris in the 2024 election due to her “infectious” laugh, a remark that drew criticism from U.S. national security spokesperson John Kirby, who urged Putin to refrain from commenting on U.S. elections.
During the debate, Trump mentioned Putin’s endorsement of Harris and emphasized his desire to end the war in Ukraine. Harris countered by suggesting that Trump’s proposed quick resolution of the conflict would involve conceding to Russia, which she argued was not in line with American values.
