Nicki Minaj has disclosed that she is not a U.S. citizen, despite paying “millions” in taxes. She made this announcement during a TikTok Live session with a fan, where she also offered advice on the fan’s situation.
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Nicki immigrated to the U.S. as an undocumented child. Although she has contributed significantly in taxes, she still hasn’t obtained citizenship. “I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” she remarked.
Reflecting on her background, she noted, “I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago… You would think that with the millions I’ve paid in taxes, I would have been granted honorary citizenship long ago.”
Minaj’s immigration status has been public knowledge since she criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies in 2018, particularly regarding the separation of migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border.
She shared her own experience of coming to the U.S. illegally at age five, expressing empathy for children facing similar traumatic situations, stating, “I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me.”
