The Wright Brothers Monument is located on Kill Devil Hill at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
On Saturday afternoon, several individuals lost their lives when a single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area near the airport within the memorial.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. while the aircraft was attempting to land, according to witnesses.
Following the crash, the plane caught fire, but local fire departments, including the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, were able to extinguish the flames.
As a result of the crash, the airport will remain closed until further notice.
The National Transportation Safety Board is set to investigate the situation, and the Federal Aviation Administration has been informed.
Additionally, the Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday.
