The House of Representatives has passed a bill for its first reading to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages.
If approved, this university would be an addition to the current educational institutions in Nigeria.
Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other lawmakers, the bill aims to enhance the study of Nigerian languages. A second reading is anticipated in the upcoming weeks, followed by a public hearing to gather feedback from stakeholders.
As outlined in Section II, Part I of the bill, the university will “promote the advancement of learning and offer opportunities for all individuals, irrespective of race, creed, gender, or political beliefs, to pursue higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures.”
The proposal also seeks to establish academic and professional programs that offer diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate research, emphasizing practical skills in Nigerian languages and cultures to support national development.
Furthermore, the university is intended to serve as a catalyst for the effective use of Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources through postgraduate training, research, and innovation once it is established.
