Adedeji Adeleke, the father of Nigerian-American superstar musician Davido, announced that his new power plant is set to begin operations in January 2025.
During a speech as a Layperson from the West-Central Africa Division at the Seventh Day Adventist General Conference Annual Council on October 15, 2024, he revealed that the facility will have a capacity of 1,250 MW, making it Nigeria’s largest thermal power plant.
Adeleke discussed the challenges he faced in securing the environmental permit for the $2 billion project, mentioning encounters with “difficult government officials.” One official notably told him that the project would never be realized. Refusing to accept this statement as final, he turned to prayer for guidance.
He also mentioned that his company, Pacific Energy, collaborates closely with Chinese engineering firms for the plant’s construction and design.
Previously, at Adeleke University’s 9th graduation ceremony in July 2023, he highlighted that the project began in a village in Ondo State, creating over 1,000 jobs for local residents and involving the import of turbines valued at around $72 million.
However, the project faced setbacks when looters stole components from the turbine machines, causing about $5 million in losses and delaying progress.
Despite these challenges, Adeleke has expressed satisfaction that the project is now nearing completion.
