Former One Direction member Liam Payne was laid to rest in a private funeral on Wednesday, November 20, attended by his family, friends, and former bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson.
Liam’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, and Cheryl Cole, the mother of his son, were also present at the service.
The funeral followed the repatriation of Liam’s body from Argentina to the U.K., where his father, Geoff Payne, obtained permission for the transfer. Reports confirmed that Liam’s remains were moved from a Buenos Aires morgue to a British cemetery established in the 1800s.
Liam, 31, tragically passed away on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Authorities were alerted by hotel staff about a possibly intoxicated man behaving aggressively, raising concerns for his safety. When emergency responders arrived, they found Liam deceased, with injuries described as “incompatible with life.”
An autopsy revealed multiple drugs in Liam’s system, including “pink cocaine” (a mix of ecstasy, ketamine, caffeine, and 2-CB), as well as cocaine, benzodiazepines, and crack. He suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull, from the fall.
Liam had traveled to Argentina with Kate Cassidy to support former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert on October 2. The couple initially planned a five-day trip but extended their stay. Kate returned to Miami alone on October 14, two days before Liam’s death.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on October 18, Kate expressed her grief, calling Liam her “angel” and sharing her unconditional love for him. “I will continue to love you for the rest of my life,” she wrote.
