Police are still searching for the gunman who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in what authorities have called a premeditated and targeted attack.
The suspect, described as a light-skinned male wearing a cream-colored jacket, black facemask, black-and-white sneakers, and a gray backpack, fled the scene by hiding in an alleyway before escaping on an e-bike into Central Park. Investigators recovered three shell casings and a cellphone from the alley, which will be analyzed for evidence.
While the motive remains unclear, NYPD officials believe the attack was planned in advance.
UnitedHealth Group released a statement mourning Thompson, calling him a “highly respected colleague and friend” and pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The company had been hosting its annual analysts’ conference at a nearby hotel but ended the event abruptly upon learning of the incident.
UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty apologized to attendees and expressed the seriousness of the situation, promising updates through alternative channels.
