The incident occurred when a metal hash pipe, allegedly thrown by a drug user in the crowd, struck John in the temple as he performed on stage.
The impact caused him to black out, with blood streaming down his face, leaving fans and bandmates fearing he had been shot.
John recounted the shocking event in Farewell Yellow Brick Road, describing how his bodyguard, former Mr. Universe Jim Morris, dragged him off stage as paramedics treated his head injury.
Despite the chaos, John recalled humorously how the feathers from his costume complicated the situation and remarked that the memory has since become one of his favorites from touring.
The singer has faced additional challenges recently, including temporary vision loss.
