Police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, are questioning a man in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan.
The suspect had fled New York City after the shooting on Wednesday but was spotted by a witness at a McDonald’s in Altoona on Monday.
The man had a gun similar to the one used in the killing, and he was carrying fake IDs, including one matching the ID the suspect used to check into a hostel before the murder.
Police also recovered writings and a computer from the man. Authorities are working to confirm his identity and have asked Greyhound for the passenger manifest. The NYPD is sending detectives to Altoona, located about 100 miles from Pittsburgh, to investigate further.
Detectives have been working through hundreds of tips and leads, focusing on the suspect’s journey to Manhattan. They’ve reviewed extensive video footage from bus stops along his route.
The shooter targeted Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown, where his company was hosting a conference.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but authorities say there is no evidence linking the murder to Thompson’s personal life.
After the shooting, the suspect fled through Central Park and took a taxi to the Port Authority, where he boarded a bus out of the city.
The police are still searching for the gun used in the attack.
