A U.S. judge on Monday postponed the trial for Ryan Routh, the suspect in the second alleged assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump, to September 2025, according to a court order.
Routh’s legal team requested the trial, initially set for February 10, be delayed due to the extensive evidence involved. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, based in Florida, approved the delay but rejected the defense’s proposal to push the trial to December 2025, deeming it “excessive.” The trial is now scheduled to begin on September 8, 2025.
Routh, 58, faces five federal charges, including the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. Prosecutors allege he positioned himself with a firearm near a Trump-owned golf course in Florida in September, intending to target Trump during the presidential campaign. Routh has pleaded not guilty.
Judge Cannon, who is presiding over the case, previously oversaw the now-dismissed criminal case accusing Trump of unlawfully retaining classified documents after his first term.
