Former President Donald Trump stated on Friday that European nations are unsure how to resolve the ongoing three-year Russia-Ukraine conflict. Speaking from the Oval Office, he reiterated his warning that, without a resolution, the war could escalate into World War III. When questioned about the lack of European-led peace proposals, aside from U.S. involvement, Trump asserted that he alone could bring the war to an end.
“They are in a difficult position and don’t know how to stop the war,” he remarked, adding, “I believe I do.” He also suggested that, despite past tensions over the “Russia hoax,” he has maintained a strong relationship with President Vladimir Putin, whom he believes is open to ending the conflict. “I think he’ll be more accommodating than expected, which is a positive sign,” Trump stated.
He further claimed that had the war never begun, a favorable deal could have been reached without Ukraine making concessions. Trump admitted to facing challenges in dealing with Ukraine, saying they “don’t have the leverage,” but suggested negotiations with Russia could be “easier with the right cards.”
Meanwhile, the European Union announced on Thursday that Ukraine will receive $33 billion in new aid, sourced from frozen Russian assets, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
