The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK announced their support for an Arab-backed $53 billion reconstruction plan for Gaza, aimed at rebuilding the enclave without displacing its residents. In a joint statement, they described the plan—developed by Egypt and endorsed by Arab leaders—as a viable path to improving Gaza’s dire humanitarian conditions. However, the proposal has been rejected by Israel and former U.S. President Donald Trump, who proposed a separate vision to transform Gaza into a “Middle East Riviera.”
The Egyptian plan calls for an independent committee of Palestinian technocrats to temporarily govern Gaza under the Palestinian Authority’s supervision, overseeing humanitarian aid and administration. The four European nations expressed their commitment to collaborating with the Arab initiative and acknowledged its significance. Their statement emphasized that Hamas should no longer govern Gaza or pose a threat to Israel, while also affirming support for the Palestinian Authority’s leadership and reform efforts.
