U.S. President Donald Trump stated that political and economic tensions between the United States and its 2026 World Cup co-hosts, Canada and Mexico, would add excitement to the tournament. His remarks came after signing an executive order to establish a task force, which he will lead, to coordinate with federal agencies in planning and organizing the 48-team event.
Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the Oval Office, Trump addressed the recent 25% tariffs imposed on Canadian and Mexican goods, which were temporarily suspended under a North American trade pact. When asked about the World Cup amid these trade disputes, he remarked that tension adds to the excitement.
The trade exemptions for Canada and Mexico are set to expire on April 2, after which Trump has threatened to implement a broader system of reciprocal tariffs. The 2026 World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, will feature an expanded format with 104 matches, including an extra knockout round.
