Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became emotional as he vowed to stand by the Canadian people amid an ongoing trade conflict with Donald Trump. Trudeau, who is in his final weeks in office after being pressured to resign by his party over disputes regarding his approach to U.S. tariffs, reflected on his time as leader during a media address on Thursday. Fighting back tears, he emphasized his commitment to putting Canadians first and reassured them of his continued support.

Trudeau highlighted the unity among Canadians in facing the trade dispute, stressing that their solidarity strengthens the country’s bargaining position against a much larger trading partner. He condemned the U.S.-imposed tariffs as unjustified and reaffirmed Canada’s determination to resist them.

Tensions between the two nations have escalated, with reports of a heated phone exchange between Trudeau and Trump.

However, Trump later announced a temporary reprieve on some tariff increases. Defending his trade policies, Trump claimed that Canada, among other nations, had long taken advantage of the U.S., framing his actions as a necessary correction.

Trudeau previously criticized the tariffs as a reckless move and warned that the trade war could persist.

In January, he announced his resignation ahead of the upcoming election, citing internal party divisions over his handling of the situation. Calling his tenure an honor, he reaffirmed his dedication to Canadians in his final days in office.
