Wendy Williams discussed her sobriety on The View Friday morning, confirming that while she is currently sober, she broke her sobriety in July 2024 when she drank on her birthday.
The talk show host, who was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2022, has been open about her struggles with substance abuse but stated that she is now living an “alcohol-free” lifestyle. In a pre-recorded interview aired on Friday’s episode, Williams shared that while she is doing well, she did drink on her 60th birthday in July after being transferred from an assisted living facility in Connecticut back to one in New York. She clarified that she cannot leave the facility without her guardian’s permission.
When asked by co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin about her relationship with alcohol moving forward, Williams responded that she plans to stay alcohol-free for the rest of her life, though she admitted to celebrating her birthday with a drink. She emphasized, however, that she has no plans to drink again.
Williams has faced long-standing struggles with alcohol, and in a 2024 documentary, her son Kevin Hunter Jr. revealed that doctors believed her dementia diagnosis could have been linked to years of heavy drinking. Reports also noted that she sometimes appeared intoxicated while hosting her talk show.
Despite being placed under a conservatorship, Williams asserted on The View that she is not incapacitated. She explained that her recent hospital visit was to receive medical evaluations, including tests for her thyroid, and to get an independent assessment of her health, which she disputes being impaired.
