China stated Thursday that it is not engaged in any trade or tariff negotiations with the United States, contradicting recent signals from the White House suggesting a potential easing of tensions. “There are absolutely no ongoing economic or trade talks between China and the U.S.,” said He Yadong, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, during a press briefing. He emphasized that reports suggesting otherwise should be disregarded.
“If the U.S. truly wants to resolve these issues, it must remove all unilateral measures against China,” He added.
This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at a possible thaw in trade relations earlier this week.
The latest developments follow the U.S. imposing 145% tariffs on Chinese products, prompting Beijing to retaliate with its own tariffs and stricter export controls on key minerals.
