Andry Rajoelina secures a third term as President of Madagascar, winning the disputed elections with 59% of the votes, despite opposition boycotts and criticism of his candidacy.
Low voter turnout at 46% marked a historic low, attributed to calls for boycotts by eleven other presidential candidates.
The constitutional court denied petitions to cancel Rajoelina’s candidacy, leading to six weeks of protests and a curfew in Antananarivo.
Rajoelina, a 49-year-old businessman and former DJ, previously overthrew ex-President Ravalomanana in a 2009 coup.
His challenge now includes addressing high poverty rates and restoring political stability.
Opposition candidates reject the November 16 results. The electoral board’s results must be verified by the constitutional court within nine days.
