Congress has passed a measure, part of the National Defense Authorization Act, preventing any president, including President Biden, from unilaterally withdrawing the United States from NATO without Senate approval or an Act of Congress.
This bipartisan effort, led by Senators Tim Kaine and Marco Rubio, emphasizes Congress’s commitment to the NATO alliance, reinforcing its importance, particularly in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
President Biden, in contrast to his predecessor, has strengthened ties with NATO, deploying more troops and resources to Europe and overseeing alliance expansion.
Despite Trump’s mixed messages on NATO, his supporters argue that his criticisms spurred member-states to meet defense spending obligations, while critics express concerns about weakening the alliance’s unity and purpose.
