The ‘Renewed Hope’ Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) was inaugurated in Abuja by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
The initiative, themed “Better Days Ahead,” aims to financially support 250 senior citizens aged 65 and above in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Mrs. Tinubu, represented by the vice president’s wife, Hajia Nana Shettima, announced a ₦950 million disbursement for the scheme, with each state receiving ₦25 million and beneficiaries getting ₦100,000 each.
The scheme goes beyond material distribution, offering free medical checkups, eye examinations, high blood pressure checkups, counselling, and enrollment in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, highlighted the initiative’s emphasis on expressing gratitude and respect for elders’ wisdom and experience while addressing economic challenges during the festive period.
